UNBOXING: My First VoxBox!

I am so excited, because I get to share my first ever VoxBox and all of the treats that came with it!

Firstly, let me tell you a little bit about how I managed to get my greedy little hands on all the beauty products:

Enter: Influenster

Influenster is a websit/app that allows any self-proclaimed beauty guru to rate, review, and ask others in the Influenster community about new, popular, or any beauty products worth a conversation. The great part is, it's open to anyone; you don't have to be an YouTube star or have a small village of followers on Instagram to be able to win FREE BOXES OF MAKEUP. Is anyone else as excited about this as I am??

When you review a product, ask a question about a product, or answer someone else's question, you earn points that are rewarded with "badges." Badges are good. They are what get you in the running to win a box. Once you've been invited to an Influesnter "campaign," you will be a small questionnaire. Fill out the questionnaire and the Influenster team will email you with a confirmation if you are chosen for a box!

From there, all you have to do is enjoy the products, reflect about how #blessed you are, and review the goods on your social media platform(s.)

My first box (and the only one I have received so far) is called the Poppy VoxBox. It arrived in the mail looking adorable.

Like this.

When I opened it up, I was surprised to find a solid variety of products (and even some coupons!)

These are the products that were included:

     Working clockwise, we have:
     1. Tide 4-in-1 Pods plus Downy
     2. Nyakio Kenyan Coffee Face Scrub
     3. eva.nyc Freshen Up Dry Shampoo
     4. 7th Heaven Soften Sock Masques
     5. Nivea In-Shower Body Lotion
     6. Rimmel Scandaleyes Precision Micro Eyeliner "Black Noir"
     7. (not pictured) Rimmel Oh My Gloss! Oil Tint in "Master Pink"

*Sorry, totes forgot to take a picture of the Rimmel Lip Oil, because it's been living in my purse.*

Here are my opinions on the aforementioned products:

1. Tide 4-in-1 Pods with Downy

These Tide pods are good. In fact, they were all I used in college. I refused to use anything else, because they're just SO handy. They became even handier when they added Downy. So, so magical. Here's the verdict, though. As good as they are, they still don't beat my mom's recipe for homemade laundry soap. (Seriously, the best stuff ever and SO easy to make.) I just can't beat how cheap it is to make my own laundry soap, and the scent is so light and fresh. So much so that when I was trying out these new Tide pods, I found the scent bordering on overpowering. Don't get me wrong, the scent was pleasant. But in the end, I can't say that I like it better than the homemade stuff. That being said, if you find the idea of making your own laundry soap daunting, go with these! They are definitely my first choice of any store-bought laundry detergents.

2. Nyakio Kenyan Coffe Face Polish

I was probably most excited to try this, because the name sounds so intriguing. (Am I right?) I did a little research on the brand before trying the product out, and found that it was a fairly expensive brand (compared to the other products in the box.) I have to say, though, I didn't love it. Don't hate me, though. I think it had to do with my skin type more than anything. It just felt a little TOO moisturizing, almost like there was a film left over on my face after rinsing. It may work really well for dry and/or insensitive skin types, but for me...meh. I have to say, it did smell AMAZING. And luxurious. Like if the Four Seasons was a face scrub, this would be it. So, in my opinion, that makes it way worth it.

3. eva.nyc Freshen Up Dry Shampoo

This stuff is amaaaazing! (You have to sing the "amazing" part, or it doesn't count.) It smells....I can't even explain the goodness. Actually, I can. It smells exactly like DryBar Triple Sec, except it's a fraction of the cost. And I love that you can actually get this dry shampoo in a travel-size. I always need a travel-size dry shampoo...to throw in my overnight bag, my "gym" (lol) bag, my purse....you know. And it's surprisingly hard to find, so I'm excited about this one. Two thumbs up for this product!

4. 7th Heaven Soften Sock Masques

So, as of late... (I love saying that...I mean, I sound pretentious, but like, in a funny way.)...anyway, as of late, I've been loving to take masks with me when I stay in hotels. I don't know why. Everything just seems more pampering in a hotel, and it's a nice treats. This brand, 7th Heaven, makes great masks that you can easily pick up at Walmart or CVS, and they're so cheap! I've gotten face masks from this brand an uncountable about of times, and I always love them. These foot masks, though....they're going to be my new hotel treat. My skin always gets dehydrated in hotel rooms, and these are so moisturizing! I know they will hit the spot. And for the price point, you just can't beat it!

5. Nivea In-Shower Body Lotion

This isn't my first experience with the In-Shower body lotion. I've used it before and, the short version is: I like it. It really is a good alternative to regular lotion, if you're like me and HATE putting on lotion. (?) It doesn't leave your skin feeling sticky at all, just healthy. But it does leave a residue behind in your shower, and honestly, your body (if you are using it consistently.) I like to think of it like hair products: the products are good, but every once in a while, you need to clarify. Otherwise, it can just build up and DAT NASTY. So, I do recommend this, but just be warned. And also, it can cause minor breakouts if you have sensitive skin. But it's still good! Really, I promise.

6. Rimmel Scandaleyes Precision Micro Eyeliner

This is now in my top two liquid, felt-tip eyeliners. This is a big moment, people. I really love this! I love that the tips is so precise, that I can literally get right next to my lashline and make it look like I tightlined if I want to. And its intensity lasts all day, no fading, no smudging. Now my #1 is still my Jordan felt-tip liquid eyeliner, because it does all of those things and is DIRT CHEAP, but  it's not as precise. Life is just a game of tradeoffs. That's the one thing I took from my Econ class. Probably because it's the only thing I understood. Final verdict: this stuff is awesome. Try it. Love it.

7. Rimmel Oh My Gloss! Oil Tint

Like is said before, I keep this in my purse at all times, now. I love it, because it's beautiful, yes. But it also feels like I am doing something good for my lips when I wear it. As opposed to liquid lipsticks, which are like pure torture. The color they sent me is the most beautiful baby pink. If you watch RHOBH, this is the Erika Jayne lip color we've all been searching for. I just love this stuff. Usually, I like lip oils, but I prefer something with a little waxier consistency to create a barrier between me and the world. (I take that back. That was weird.) But I like the formula of this, specifically. It's in between your usual lip oil formula and a lip balm. Win. And it's bubblegum pink, so.....

Well, that was long, but I hoped it helped if you were looking into buying any of these products! If you love to try new beauty products (p.s. they have VoxBoxes for other categories, too.) be sure to check out Influenster! It seriously is so fun! If there are any products you want me to review, just let me know! It would be my pleasure. Really.

*DISCLAIMER*
THESE PRODUCTS WERE SENT TO ME FOR TESTING PURPOSES, BUT OPINIONS ARE ALL MY OWN.

Zeedus Lapeedus! My Top 5 Favorite Metallic Lip Products (Actually, Top 6…but who's counting?)

Raise your hand if you're into the metallic lip trend!

I am. I 100% am. I'm more in love with metallic lips than Zenon is with Protozoa. Whoah. Not true, not true.

But I do love the trend. I'm getting bored with the plain, old, matte liquid lip. (Don't hate me.) Plus, I feel like it's much easier to pull off. Sure, it depends how bold you want to go with the look (I've got a SERIOUSLY bold option, btw.,) but there are so many wearable, everyday options that are very flattering and don't make your lips look like two shriveled-up gummy bears. (I stole that line from Full House.)

Drugstores, superstores, and beauty counters are all brimming with good options at the moment, but I have put together a few great ones I already had in my collection to help guide you in your decision-making process:

STELLAR!

1. Too Faced Melted Metal Liquified Metallic Lipstick

This is a beautiful formula that is easy to apply and surprisingly comfortable! Much more comfortable than the original Melted Lipstick, in my opinion. It comes in a squeeze tube with a doe foot applicator attached to the end, making it as easy to apply as a regular lipgloss. I got mine in the shade "Melted Metallic Tu-Tu," which is a gorgeous, brightening, wearable color for everyday. The tube is deceivingly punchier than the actual color. It's just a pretty, brightened rose shade with a hint of gold glimmer. And BONUS! It smells like SweetTarts! Yummm.

Hack: I found mine at TJ Maxx for around $4.99. Definitely check it out before dropping big(ish) bucks at Ulta or Sephora.

2.  Milani 3D Glitzy Glamour Gloss

Wow, an actor could warm up to that name before going on stage! Sheesh.

Okay, so I wasn't sure these were still available, because I found them at my local DOLLAR TREE (ya, I said it.,) which is usually where discontinued or limited-edition products go. Sometimes, though, the products that make it to Dollar Tree are just being reformulated or repackaged.

Anyway, idk what happened, and I don't care! I'm just happy the makeup gods led me to these babes. They are definitely the most subtly metallic of all the products I'm mentioning today, but they just give the most beautiful hint of metallic shimmer…just enough. They are sheer, so you can layer them over other lip colors. And they are the perfect amount of sticky. You know what I mean. No one wants a lipgloss so sticky that your hair gets stuck on your lips when you walk outside. (Oh hey, west Texas!,) but you want a little bit of grip or else it won't last 5min on your lips. PREACH.

I have the shades "42," a summery, true orange with multi-color glitter, "39," a bright, but sheer, purple with various shades of purple glitter (much more wearable than I'm making it sound,) and "43," a baby pink with pink glitter. Now, if we're being technical, these are more shimmery than true metallic, but they give the same effect on the lips….and they are just beautiful, so who cares? "Just pretty makeup," as my mom would say.

3. Elf Pout Perfector

Staying on the glittery-but-still-metallic-y page, this one is pure magic. It packs the MOST punch. I have the shade "Glow," which is a rosy tone with multicolor glitter. I've heard other beauty vloggers talk about how this product is beautiful on the center of the lips to highlight and add poutiness, but I say GO BIG OR GO HOME! I think this would be a showstopper applied all over the lips. Don't glop it on, though, because it is a thicker formula and will bunch up in that unflattering-sticky way if you get too much. But I think this is just soooo princess, and fairy, and Hollywood, and all of the nouns I'm making into adjectives. I just love it!

And, oh ya, it's only $3.00.

4. AOA Studio Wonder Metal Liquid Lip

This is my pride and joy of the day. I have not come across ANY blogger or vlogger who has talked about this brand, yet. I got these from shopmissa.com - aka - the best discovery I have ever made in my entire life. It's a dollar store, much like Dollar Tree, where everything actually is only $1.00…BUT….wait for it…..it's entirely dedicated to beauty. I KNOW…..I know.

Anyway, they have tons of great-quality products (at least from what I have tried,) I stumbled across these liquid lipsticks and HAD to try. I'll be the first to admit that I am not a liquid lipstick fan. At all. No shade, just something about liquid lipsticks don't work well with my lips. I rarely come across a formula that looks, feels, and lasts even somewhat decent on me. However, I tried these and was surprised when I actually enjoyed them! I still don't prefer the formula over a regular, moisturizing lipstick, but that's okay.

My philosophy is: if you're going to try out a new trend, it's better to spend on $1.00 on it than waste your money on something you may end up hating. Am I right?!

I got two shades: "Moon," which is a true metallic maroon shade. It is much more subtle on the lips than you would think! And I think it would be pretty on a wide range of skin tones. And "Solo," which is just a true, straight-up gunmetal. Yes, this is the seriously bold option I mentioned earlier. I got this thinking it was just too unique and cool not to try for ONE DOLLAR (sorry….still can't get past that.,) and I thought maybe I would wear it on Halloween or something. I actually love the way it looks on me. I am very surprised that it's actually quite a flattering shade. You never know until you try, I guess!

5. Covergirl Lip Lava

I'll be honest, I have a chip on my shoulder about trends.
I do NOT like going with the grain.
I need to work on that.

So when I saw this unique color, I knew I had to have it. This is the shade "Ooh La Lava." It is a cool-toned pink with lavender micro shimmer.

………I just need to take a moment for this one…………okay, I'm good.

This color is so unique, it's so beautiful, it's perfect-duochrome-cotton candy goodness all wrapped up into a little lipgloss tube.

This is a liquid lipstick in the sense that it is liquid and fully opaque, but it is not the kind of formula that dries down and sets. And I prefer this kind of formula any day. It feels creamy, and it stays looking great for a long time.

If anything, I would say that this is more opalescent than stark metallic, but there are more intensely-metallic shades of this formula, too. There is a gold that I really want to try. I think this is a great option, whether you're big into the trend or just testing the waters. You really can't go wrong with this; it just looks good every single time.

6. L'Oréal Infallible 8hr Pro Gloss

I decided to add this one in because, even though it's very subtly metallic, it's just stunning and a great formula.

I have the shade "Dulce de Leche" which is a sheer, light brown with multicolor shimmer. What I think is so beautiful about this color is that the predominant shimmer color is turquoise, which just looks so beautiful against the brown. It is really unique from any shade I've seen, drugstore or high-end.

And the formula wears amazingly! It's a little stickier that the Milani, but it wears much longer than any other lipgloss I have in my collection. Even when it does start to wear off, the shimmer stays on the lips and still looks good for hours.

There are many other, more metallic shades in the line, but I just think this is the winner shade of the bunch. It is so, so wearable, yet it is still a head-turner. I always have people ask me about it when I wear it.

And it smells like cotton candy!
I would buy it just for that!
LOVE.

Whew!

That was a lot of me rambling on, but I CAN'T HELP IT! I love makeup too much. I could talk about it all day, every day. I hope this gives you some inspo to try out the trend, and not feel guilty about spending too much money on something that is "here today, gone tomorrow." If you know of any metallic lip products you think I can't live without, or if you try any of these, let me know on:

Pretty Little Latte: My Top 5 Starbucks Drinks + a Couple of Hacks

If you are like me, ordering at places like Starbucks (or worse, Sonic!) can be a bit of a stressful experience. Too many options! I'm already a shy, introverted person, and I don't need to drag out the already-dreaded ordering situation. The longer I stand there, the more I break out in a cold sweat. (Too dramatic?)

BUT

If you're like me, a creative person, you probably also like to concoct your own recipes. Mmmmhmmmm…

I have the answer to both of these situations, because I have come up with 5 different drink combos that are absolute showstoppers, so you can strut into that cinnamon-scented hipster mecca, have your super-cool and unique order ready, and strut back out LIKE A BOSS.

Without further ado:

1. Blended Chai - Okay, I originally had this at Coffee Bean, not Starbs. Oops. I'm pretty sure it would taste good anywhere, though. This one's pretty self-explanatory. It sounds simple, but there's something about this warm, yet frozen treat that always hits the spot on a hot day. Maybe it's just because it reminds me of Malibu. Or maybe because it's heaven in a cup. Probably both. HACK: Order it double-blended for an extra smooth, creamy bev.

2. Iced Youthberry Tea w/ a shot of coconut milk - I heard a girl on YouTube talk about her version of this, which she called "The Pink Drink" (so cute!,) but she got the Passion tea, instead. Youthberry is one of my absolute favorite Teavana teas, so I chose that. Of course, you can add a splash of whatever kind of milk you like, or omit it, but I just like the coconut with the berry notes of the tea. Mmmmm, re-freshing! P.S. I sometimes add a packet of sugar in the raw. I have a sugar in the raw addiction. I hoard it in my pantry. Forreal.

3. Doppio Espresso con Panna - That's just the fancy, Italian way of saying "double espresso with whipped cream." Sign me up! I want to feel fancy and Italian! If you're not into espresso shots in the purest form, you might like this. The whipped cream sends it over the top. *I suggest sipping this one while wearing gigantic black sunglasses and slowly browsing through an expensive store. Doggie in purse optional.

4. Short Hot Chocolate w/ hazelnut - HACK: Did you know that you can order a size smaller than the Tall? It's true! I always order a short when I want something indulgent; it makes me feel a little less guilty, I guess. Starbucks hot chocolate is one of my favorites on its own, but if you want something that tastes like hot, molten Nutella, ask for 1 pump of Hazelnut. Brb, gotta go get one.

5. Affogato - or Frappuccino, affogato-style. An affogato is really just an espresso shot, poured over ice cream. You just gasped with both shock and delight, didn't you? At Starbucks you can order a vanilla bean Frappuccino (or any kind that you like,) and ask for it "affogato-style." They will pour a shot of espresso over the top, and you will fall in love. It's everything - hot, cold, sweet, wonderful…all the adjectives.

I hope you add some of these to your to-try list! And if you invent any awesome coffee recipes on your next run, be sure to Instagram it and tag me @thecontemporaryprincess!

15 Ways to Feel Happier, Starting Today!

So let's just get this out first thing:
I am bad at a lot of things.
Painting the nails on my left hand
Not laughing during serious moments
Golf
Taking price tags off of presents before I wrap them
Understanding Econ
Not Facebook stalking celebs

I mean, seriously. The list is infinite.

If there's one thing that I am, though, it's HAPPY.
I've always taken pride in this fact, actually, because it's one thing in which I don't have to try.
Not even a little.

That being said, even the happiest of people have testing times in their lives.
And it's so easy to get into the "if I only had {fill in the blank,} I would be truly happy" mindset.

It's during these times, that it's most important to pull ourselves out of the pessimistic state we're in, before it becomes a habit.

These are some of the ways I refind my happiness every single day and stay optimistic.

1. Stop to smell the roses- This isn't a demand or a rule. I've only simply noticed that when I stop to enjoy whatever it is I'm doing - anything from taking a coffee break to folding the laundry - it takes the stress and the chore out of the task. You may be thinking "Um, getting coffee isn't a chore." And you'd be right, typically. But if you are having a day where you have a million things on your mind, and you're just plain old stressed…well…anything can seem like a chore. Train your brain to find the good things. I was cleaning out my drawers the other day (something that, if you know me at all, you know I DREAD,) and I found myself trying on all of the makeup I had forgotten about, because it was buried under a pile of….more makeup? :/ All of a sudden, cleaning out didn't feel like such chore. In fact, it felt more like shopping in my own home. My point is, there's good in every situation, it's up to you to find it.

2. Compliment someone- I can't tell you how many times in my life I've encountered someone that immediately gave mean vibes….a cashier, a nurse, the person next in line. When that happens to me, I like to make it my personal mission to see if I can get that person to smile. Why? I don't know. But I can tell you, in my experience, just one single compliment…"I like your necklace!"… can completely change a person's demeanor. Another thing to consider is that you have no idea how that person's day is going or what is happening in his/her life. A single kind word may totally turn their day around. Noticing beauty around you and beauty in other people is one surefire way to feel happy. And it's just nice to be nice. Am I right?

3. Do one thing just for you- We all know it's important to take time for yourself. But I say, take it one step further and do something everyday that you truly love. Maybe it's painting or drawing. Maybe it's singing. Maybe it's just putting on your favorite music and dancing around your room for five minutes. (I do that all the time. No shame.) Whatever it is, make sure you set apart some time just for you. Just to do what you love.

4. Be resilient- I am an artist-type. I love painting, photography, acting, dancing (any kind of performing, really.) So I have, by default, subjected myself to a lifetime of rejection. It sounds terrible, but it's actually okay. Because of it, I have learned to be resilient. You know how they say "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?" Well, I may be insane, because I am the type that stays down for .2 seconds, gets up, and tries again. I may be insane, but I'm insane and happy. Because holding onto a failure (or at least what you yourself consider to be a "failure") is like not forgiving someone that has hurt you. It weighs you down. You can't move forward. It inhibits your personal growth and in the end, you just end up hurting yourself. Hard situations are hard, and they do hurt, but they don't have to hurt forever. You just have to get back up and try again. Eventually, you'll realize you've succeeded a lot more than you'll ever fail. And that feels pretty good.

5. Sweat- I feel silly suggesting this, because I AM THE WORST AT EXERCISING. Really, I am. But exercising gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands….they just don't!

(giphy.com)

6. Do someone a favor- Same as #2. Being nice is nice. (P.S. It doesn't count if you're doing it just to look nice. The joy comes from the satisfaction of knowing you actually did the right thing.)

7. Fake it 'till you make it-  Pretty self-explanatory. Some days you just don't feel happy. That's normal. I think it's a state of mind on those kinds of days. Maybe one things happens that throws you off your game, and then everything seems to snowball. You can change that. Just change your state of mind. Find a positive and think yourself happy.

8. Don't hold grudges- Take it from me. I've definitely been the grudge-holder in many situations. And it did nothing but keep me in the pessimistic state of stewing over something that had already been done. Don't be like me and let that get in the way of your happiness. And don't let someone who was mean to you have the control over your happiness.

Uh uh girl!
(giphy.com)

9. Complete a task you've been dreading- This might seem counterintuitive, but just give it a try. Maybe it's going to the DMV. Maybe it's cleaning out your garage. In my case, I am suuuuuper shy. I, literally, would rather do anything than have to talk to a stranger. Seriously. Paying in a store? Hate. Ordering at a restaurant? FORGET IT. Ugh, I'm breaking out in a cold sweat just thinking about it. But you know what? Every time I do one of those things - things that seem so simple to other people but are a challenge to me - I walk away feeling accomplished. I know it sounds silly, but doing something you've been dreading will give you an immediate boost of confidence. Just try it, and tell me you don't walk away like:

(giphy.com)

10. Hum yourself happy- Hey, it worked for the dwarves…

11. Stop worrying- Seriously, the sooner we learn to stop worrying (specifically about things we can't control,) the sooner the world will be a happier place. That's the reason God commanded it in the Bible. He didn't command it to be mean, or because he knew it would be a tough challenge for us. He commanded it, because He wants his children to be happy. And He knows (i mean, everything, but…) that giving all our worries to Him will take a heck of a lot of pressure off of us.

12. Count your blessings…literally- Seriously. Sit down, and start writing. Don't leave anything out. Sometimes we just need a visual aid to help us see that we have a lot more positives than we do negatives in life.

13. Indulge in something nostalgic- This is very scientific. Lolz jk. I don't know why this works. All I know is, every time I pick up a Lip Smacker or listen to any song from …Baby One More Time, I am truly blissful. I don't know how it works, it just does.

(giphy.com)

14. Smile at everyone you see- the more you smile, the happier you'll be. Fact.

15. Pray- When all else fails, or even when all else doesn't fail, pray. Praying is the secret to happiness. Knowing you have a best friend you always, always count on is the best feeling in the world. Someone you can always talk to, will never get annoyed at you, will always have time… someone you can cry to, someone who has blessed infinitely…someone who loves you with an everlasting love, someone that will never disappoint or hurt you, someone you can come to with anything, big or small, because He already knows everything about you - every hair on your head... that's where true joy comes from.

The Only Boho Updo You'll Ever Need to Know

     Sometimes, you just feel like:

But you want to feel like:

The best pick-me-up for a day like this (at least for me) is a beautiful updo. I always stand a little taller and feel a little more Lilly Van der Woodsen-y when I wear one. Many people are intimidated by updos, but a lot are actually deceivingly easy.

This? This is one of the easiest.
And fastest.
Seriously, I can do this in like 2 minutes.

It's also a great hairstyle for 2nd or 3rd day hair.
I personally like it, because it:

1. gives my hair a break from heat styling

2. can be casual or dressy

3. takes a fraction of the time it takes to curl or otherwise style my extremely thick, frizzy hair

4. prevents my hair from getting tangled in my jewelry or scarf

5. the messier, the better (You really can't screw it up.)

Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Brush your hair into a low ponytail, but on the last twist of your hair tie, only pull your hair halfway through to create a small loop.

Step 2: Take the remainder of the hair and wrap it around the loop, tucking the ends into the hair tie so that they stay put.

Step 3:Using both hands, slightly part hair above the hair tie, so that you create a small "pocket."

Step 4:Flip the loop up and tuck it inside the little pocket you made. At this point, it should look like a little roll. You may have to do some finagling to make sure it stays inside of the pocket and doesn't flip all the way through, like a topsy tail. Secure with a few bobby pins.

Step 5: With one of your hands, create a "claw." Take that claw, and pull up on the top portion of your hair to create volume. (It helps to anchor what you've already done with your other hand, to make sure you don't pull out any pins.)

Step 6: Gently pinch and pull all around the undo, to create the volume and texture that you like. Then, bobby pin any loose pieces - especially around the sides of the hair - until you like the look of your updo. Remember, you can get as messy as you'd like.

Step 7: Finish with with hairspray, and pull out some face-framing pieces if you'd like.

And you're finished!

Seriously, once you try it out a couple of times, you'll be able to throw it together in only a couple of minutes. My favorite part of this hairstyle is that it looks a little different every time. I also like that since it's a little messy, it just looks better throughout the day, as some of the hair around your face falls.

I was anxious, the first time I tried this, that my thick hair wouldn't work with this style, but I was surprised find that it works just fine!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! And I hope you love this hairstyle as much as I do. If you try it out (maybe for Valentine's day?), make sure to tag me on Instagram: @thecontemporaryprincess, so I can see your beautiful creation!
